Lake City/Gunnison Area Waters

June 25, 2008

As the old Peter, Paul, and Mary song reminds us "Come gather round people wherever you roam; and about that the waters around you have grown, for the times they are a changing...."

And indeed, they are a chang'n! The "grown" waters are receeding and the difficult fishing times are truly past. Small to medium streasms in the Lake City area are much clearer and no longer running at flood stage. Brush Creek, the upper stretches of Cebolla Creek, Rambouillet Creek, and Mill Creek fisheries are all reporting excellent fishing. The road to Big Blue is open and while the waters are still high, it is fishable and some of our regulars are excited about being the first to fish it. Henson creek is becomming lower each day and while not ready yet, there are a few eager people fishing the brush areas and shallow banks.

The Lake Fork is finally below 1,000 CFS compared to the 1,900 CFS of two weeks ago. We think it will be fishing by July 4th, but be careful wading. The color is improving every day and small caddis hatches are evident. A major piece of news is that the river above Lake San Cristobal looked fantastic yesterday. Because this section of the river is best in early sesason, we anticipate that it will provide high qauality fishing throughout the month.

"We just caught twenty fish in the last couple of hours"! said one of the guys who rented a boat from us to fish Lake San Cristobal. Indeed, the Lake is basking in its usual early season glory both from boat and bank. Other high country lakes are mostly ice-free and fishing well.

Successful patterns right now are mostly dependent on the time of day. The standard for most streams is a size 12 or 14 Stimulator on top and a size 14 or 14 Twenty-Incher Nymph as a dropper, but mid-afternoon hatches change feeding patterns. An Elk Hair Caddis with a Bead-Head Pheasant Tail or Hares Ear dropper are often succesful. Also, try Red or Chartreuce Copper Nymphs. Because the water is still cold, many of the hook-ups will be on the nymph. Wooly Booger streamers and nymph patterns fished in the days are also successful on bigger water.

It's time to be in Lake City and to enjoy the fish!
